An acclaimed Canadian composer, writer and acoustic ecologist has died.
R. Murray Schafer was a Glenn Gould Prize winner.
His ground-breaking research in acoustic ecology helped move the needle on the understanding of soundscapes which he described as a collection of sounds, much the way a painting is a collection of visual attractions.
Schafer died over the weekend in Peterborough, Ontario from Alzheimer’s disease.
He was 88.
