First the Halton District School Board decided to rename Ryerson Public School, now the city of Burlington wants to rename the park next to it – Ryerson Park.
Residents are being asked to help.
”The new name must reflect equity, diversity and inclusion consistent with today’s standards,” the city says on its website.
Once finalists are selected, residents will be able to vote on a new name.
The favourites will be handed over to Burlington city council for approval.
The school and park were both named in honour of Egerton Ryerson and his contributions to Ontario’s education system.
However, he also played a role in the design of the residential school system.
The city says the park’s being renamed out of respect for Indigenous residents following the discovery of mass graves at the sites of former residential schools across the country.
