Mayor John Tory is calling on the province and Ottawa to get moving on vaccine passports saying it would be more effective than a city-issued certificate.
“Where just given people moving around in Toronto, York, Peel, Durham and parts beyond that, you’d have something recognized in one place and not in another,” said Tory. “I think the province is the way to go, I know they’ve been moving in the direction of the embracing the federal vaccination proof digital instrument that people will be giving but I’m willing to cooperate with anybody.”
Meantime, Peel Region’s top doctor is looking into what can be done locally to create a vaccine certificate if Ontario doesn’t commit to one.
Dr. Lawrence Loh says Peel public health is “actively exploring” with other health units on what could be done locally.
Doug Ford government has so far refused to bring in a province-wide vaccine passport despite growing calls from many as the Delta variant drives up a fourth wave.
Toronto has reached another vaccine milestone. 76 percent of people 12 and older are fully immunized and 82 percent have had one dose.
