Before ending its airlift out of Afghanistan, the federal government says it managed to help more than 3,700 flee the country.
To the unknown number of those left behind, Ottawa vows it’ll continue working to get them home.
During a federal election campaign stop in Mississauga, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada remains committed to getting Canadians still trapped there out, and following through on a pledge to resettle Afghan refugees.
“We need to continue to do more, and even as this temporary air bridge ends with the withdrawal of American and allied troops, we continue to work with regional partners.  We continue to do everything we can, and will continue to do everything we can,” stressed Trudeau.
Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau urged those still in Afghanistan to not ”lose hope” and asks them to ”stay put because there is a lot of things that are going on at the moment and we’re going to keep in constant contact with them.”
The Trudeau Liberals have been criticized for their response to the crisis.
Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole has said the government acted too late.
The NDP’s Jagmeet Singh says Trudeau knew about the problems with the evacuation effort but did not respond in a timely fashion.
Trudeau is defending his government’s actions, saying the speed with which the Taliban took control of Afghanistan came as a surprise to many around the world.
”I think a lot of people on the ground and around the world thought there would be more time.”
