A planned announcement on a provincial COVID-19 vaccine certificate program that was expected to take place Tuesday, now may be be scheduled for Wednesday.

The provincial plan, which would limit access to certain non-essential services based on vaccination status, still needs to be accepted by Premier Doug Ford and Progressive Conservative cabinet ministers before an announcement is made.

Mayor John Tory said Tuesday morning, unfortunately until now vaccine certificates have been made a political issue.

“And it’s not a political issue, it’s a very practical, business and mostly health related issue to keep people healthy and to keep businesses and schools closed and that’s the objective here,” Tory explained, “And I think Premier Ford is doing the right thing to keep considering as time goes on the evidence and different factors that will help businesses and schools stay open, and is going to act accordingly, and I’m sure there will be guidelines to go with that as to how it will actually be used.”

Under the new policy, the unvaccinated could see their access limited at non essential locations like restaurants, movie theatres and gyms.

The new certificate would not be similar to a drivers licence but rather a QR code that could be downloaded to your phone, similar to what’s being implemented in British Columbia and Quebec.

Manitoba residents are using a provincially issued card.
