MUSIC DIRECTOR, COMPOSER, ARRANGER "PEE WEE" ELLIS DIES AT 80

He was the musical director for music giants like James Brown and Van Morrison.

Alfred James “Pee Wee” Ellis has died.

He was known for helping forge new hybrids, meshing pop, jazz, R&B and more.

As a saxophonist, arranger and composer, he wrote (among others) 26 songs including “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” for James Brown.

Ellis was born in Florida, but lived in England and was reportedly suffering from a heart condition.

“Pee Wee” Ellis was 80.
