Doug Ford won.
The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the provincial law that cut the size of Toronto City Council nearly in half during the 2018 municipal election.
In a 5-4 decision, the high court found the change imposed by the Ford government did not violate the free-expression rights of candidates or voters.
The majority of justices ruled everyone had several months to adjust to the new system before the election.
In a statement, Mayor John Tory thanked the Supreme Court for its ”careful and thorough consideration” of the City’s appeal.  Only around 10 per cent of cases that seek leave to appeal are granted each year and I believe that and the disposition of the case itself demonstrate the importance of this matter.”
Meanwhile, former city councillor and current Toronto-Danforth MPP, New Democrat Peter Tabuns, also issued a statement.
”Just because it’s not illegal doesn’t make it right.  Elected municipal leaders and residents deserve a government that respects them, not one that tries to crush them.”
