Spelling out his government’s mandatory vaccine policy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says civil servants will have to get immunized by the end of this month or be forced into a leave of absence – without pay.
The estimated 267,000 employees covered by this policy must attest they’re vaccinated by October 29.
If they still haven’t had their shots or received some kind of accommodation under the Canadian Human Rights Act two weeks after that, then according to a senior government official, they will face ”disciplinary action that could ultimately cost them their job.”
Federal employees will not have to show proof of vaccination, instead they’ll have to sign an attestation form certifying they’ve had the shots.
The forms will be audited and managers can ask for proof of vaccination at any time.
The government’s also working with employers of airport businesses, airline and rail companies to come up with mandatory vaccination policies by the end of the month.
Anyone wishing to go somewhere by plane, train or vessel must have received a second shot of an approved vaccine at least 14-days before.
For travellers, there will be a short transition phase to allow the unvaccinated to show a negative test instead, though the grace period will last only until the end of November.
