In spite of the challenges posed by the fourth wave of COVID, Canada’s public health experts see reasons for optimism.
While releasing the latest modelling data, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says the reproductive number (Rt) has dropped below one for the first time since mid-July.
”However, Rt has only just fallen below one nationally, and it may still be at or above one in some areas,” Tam points out.
”To bring the epidemic under control, Rt needs to be maintained consistently below one.”
A reproductive number below one means that every infected Canadian infects less than one other person.
The country saw an average of 3,745 new cases per day over the last week.
That’s less than half of the more than 8,000 new daily cases predicted last month.
”The efforts we’ve made give us reason for optimism, but we must remain mindful for the need for continued caution in the months ahead,” adds Tam.
