The City of Toronto is the subject of a lawsuit by five people who were at the Lamport Stadium homeless encampment the day police dismantled the site.

The five allege they were assaulted by police on Just 21 when they said there were just there to support residents and prevent their homes from being destroyed.

“We’ve issued a statement of claim with the Superior Court of Justice alleging multiple damages and wrongs committed,” said lawyer David Shellnut, who is representing the plaintiffs in the case. “Negligence, mental distress, assault, battery, human rights violations and things like that.”

Named as defendants in the suit are the City of Toronto, the Toronto Police Services Board and four officers.

Earlier today, the city said they hadn’t yet been given the claim but would only respond in court.
