Johns Hopkins University says there are now five-million confirmed deaths worldwide due to COVID-19.

Many experts believe that’s a soft five-million and the true death toll could be much higher. They say that’s because many poorer countries with less testing capacity and hospital space aren’t able to get an adequate snapshot of the situation in their countries. That means many people are dying in their homes and now part of official counts.

About half of the confirmed COVID-19 deaths worldwide are in the U.S., the European Union, Great Britain and Brazil. This concentration of deaths despite them all combining for about one eighth of the world’s population.

World Health Organization officials warm the pandemic is still a long way from being over. While developed nations have vaccinated upwards of 70% of their population, vaccination efforts in much of poorer nations are barely off the ground in many cases.
