Current and former federal, provincial, local politicians and other dignitaries attended a memorial service today at Roy Thomson Hall for former premier Bill Davis.
Among them, some who followed him, like former premier Mike Harris and the current one, Doug Ford.
”I think he’ll go down as the greatest premier in Ontario,” said Harris on is way into the service.
”He appealed to a broad spectrum.  He wasn’t left wing, right wing, he had a broad coalition of supporters.”
Ford said Davis truly was a ”giant of Ontario politics,” but never behaved that way.
”You always got the sense that he thought of himself simply as Bill from Brampton,” Ford added.
Life-long friend Toronto Mayor John Tory said ”for any of us to be able to consistently represent the kind of decency and balance and humanity and humility” that Davis did ”would be a monumental personal achievement” and the mayor’s ”not sure anyone could do it.”
In his closing remarks, Tory fought back tears.
”I was blessed to have this wonderful man as a mentor and as a friend.  We were all blessed to have him as a leader and as an example.”
Premier from 1971 to 1985, Bill Davis died in August at the age of 92.
