British authorities say the antiviral, producer by drug giant Merck, is safe and effective at reducing the risk of hospitalization and death in people with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at increased risk of developing severe disease.

The drug is said to interfere with the virus’ replication and keeps virus levels low in the body.

It’s approved for adults over 18 who have at least one risk factor for severe disease. It’s to be taken twice a day for five days by people at home.

The drug is also pending review in the U-S and the European Union.
