It hasn’t exactly been a mass exodus south as the U.S. has reopened the land border with Canada for the first time in 20 months.
Few lineups have been reported at border crossings since they reopened to non-essential travellers at midnight.
Canadians currently heading south don’t need to show a negative COVID-19 test but they do still have to show one when they come back north.
Officials on both sides of the border are asking Ottawa to remove that requirement.
“We will see significant uptick in economic activity,” said New York State Congressman Brian Higgins on the border reopening. “We’re still doing it with one hand tied behind our back with this redundant, unnecessary testing requirement.”
The tests to re-enter Canada must be done up to 72 hours prior to arrival and add an extra cost to travellers.
Ottawa has said they’re aware of the complaints and the testing requirement is currently under review.
There is no testing requirement for people heading south.
