Poet, author and teacher Lee Maracle garnered global attention for not only her writing but her tireless efforts to fight Indigenous oppression in Canada.
After reading her work as a teenager and young writer, award-winning Ontario author Waubgeshig Rice says ”auntie” Maracle never missed one of his book launches.
”I don’t think she got the credit she deserved in the wider area of Canadian literature.  I think that was because she was an Indigenous woman,” Rice added.
”Hopefully everybody will be able to look back on her legacy and see just how revolutionary she was.”
Maracle won many awards and her novel Celia’s Song was short-listed for the 2020 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world.
Maracle was the granddaughter of Tsleil-Waututh chief Dan George, the artist and writer turned actor, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role opposite Dustin Hoffman in ”Little Big Man” in 1970.
