Canada Post is celebrating Indigenous singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie.
The 80-year-old, five-time Juno winner has spent much of her life balancing music with advocacy for Indigenous communities, starting with her non-profit organization the Nihewan Foundation for Native American Education in969.
She wrote the peace anthem ”Universal Soldier” in 1964 and ”Starwalker,” an ode to the American Indian movement in 1976.
Six years later, Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person to win an Oscar as co-writer of ”Up Where We Belong” for the movie ”An Officer and a Gentleman.”
A stamp design set is to be unveiled Thursday at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Canada Post says Sainte-Marie is expected to attend along with former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Perry Bellegarde.
