RAINS SUBSIDING AS B.C. ASSESSES DAMAGE FROM FLOODS, MUDSLIDES

All flood warnings and watches on Vancouver Island have been lifted although high streamflow advisories remain posted for some parts of B.C.
The River Forecast Centre says levels on rivers have peaked and receded overnight.
Flood watches are posted on waterways from Vancouver north past Pemberton and east to Lytton and Hope, while a flood warning still covers the Sumas River south of Abbotsford.
The ”atmospheric river of rain” that started on the weekend pushed some rivers to once-in-a-century levels, leading to the evacuation of the entire town of Merritt, as well as further evacuations in the Fraser Valley, Interior and Vancouver Island.
A scientist at the University of Victoria says climate change likely played a factor in the record breaking rainstorm.
Francis Zwiers says it’s too soon to know the extent to which global warming played a role, but there’s no question such events are more common and more intense.
