A Frida Kahlo painting, completed five years before her death, has sold in New York for almost $35-million.
The oil, called “Diego and I” is now the most valuable work of Latin American art ever sold at auction.
The painting is one of Kahlo’s final self-portraits and an example of the unsettling intimacy that has attracted collectors to her paintings.
The work also offers a window into her turbulent marriage to the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera who died in 1957 at the age of 70.
Kahlo died in 1954 at the age of 47.
