It’s possible travellers crossing into Canada may soon no longer require a negative PCR test.

Canada’s Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says changes to COVID-19 prevention measures at the Canadian border are coming “very soon.”

The rule is part of an order in council that is set to expire on Sunday.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he and the other provincial leaders are being consulted on this.

“Well, we’re going to have that discussion with the prime minister, and I know we had the discussion with all of the premiers. And I’ll give you an answer as soon as we sit down over the phone and have that discussion with him, and the consensus is that a lot of premiers want to see that,” Ford told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

The PCR test requirement has been defended by Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam in the past. She has said it provides another layer of protection at the border and prevents travellers form unwittingly importing cases of COVID-19 into Canada.

But lately she has indicated a change may be in the works.

As for when travellers will get the update, Minister Duclos would not be specific.
