A rare first printing of the U.S. Constitution has set a new record price for a document or book sold at auction.
Hedge fund manager Kenneth Griffin — who paid over $43M for the historic document at Sotheby’s in New York — says he’ll
loan the Constitution to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas.
He outbid a group of 17-thousand cryptocurrency enthusiasts from around the world who crowdfunded to try and buy it.
The previous auction record for a book or manuscript was in 1994 when Bill Gates purchased a collection of scientific writings by Leonardo da Vinci for 30 million.
The document that Griffin purchased is one of 13 known copies of the first printing of the Constitution and one of only two in private hands.
Griffin issued a statement.
“The U.S. Constitution is a sacred document that enshrines the rights of every American and all those who aspire to be. That is why I intend to ensure that this copy of our Constitution will be available for all Americans and visitors to view and appreciate in our museums and other public spaces.”
