Kristyn Wong-Tam has apologized for sharing misleading COVID-19 vaccine information in a newspaper column and also says she won’t be extending her role as vice chair of the Toronto’s Board of Health when it expires next month.
The Toronto city councillor penned an op-ed for the Toronto Sun on November 18th, urging people not to judge those who choose not to get vaccinated.
Wong-Tam says her intention in writing the column was to share a personal story about her parents that highlights why some people might not have chosen to get vaccinated.
In her statement of apology, Wong-Tam says she herself is vaccinated and believes the scientific evidence is clear and vaccinations are an essential tool in ending the pandemic.
“It’s important that city councillors and public health staff to speak with one voice in reassuring those who are hesitant and making sure people understand this is in the best interest of public health and individual health and that we need to have people in positions of authority that are singing from the same song book,” said Mayor John Tory.
Members of the Toronto Board of Health are responsible for overseeing and directing the work of Toronto Public Health.
