So who is being hospitalized for COVID-19 at this stage of the pandemic?
New data from Public Health Ontario shows just 9-percent of fully vaccinated people under 60 are ending up needing intensive care.
The majority of those who need hospital care are adults over 60 with the highest proportion in their 80s.
Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. Susy Hota with the University Health Network told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with guest host Jane Brown, it’s older people who are still dying after contracting COVID-19.
“And some of that might be reflected, regardless of vaccination status, some waning immunity that we do see in older age groups who were fully vaccinated earlier on as we did our roll out and prioritized people at highest risk, and so, getting the booster shots is going to be really important to try and protect older individuals to navigate all of this,” Dr. Hota explained.
Dr. Hota says people who have other health conditions are also making up those who are dying after contracting the virus.

Currently in Ontario, only a few groups qualify for a third booster shot of COVID vaccine, including healthcare workers, individuals 70 and over, people who got two doses of AstraZeneca or one dose of Johnson and Johnson and Indigenous, Inuit and Metis adults. And you need to be 168 days past your second dose to get a third one.
