The federal government is responding to calls to get tough with people who intimate health care workers.

New proposed changes to the Criminal Code would make it illegal to intimidate doctors and other health care workers if it impedes them from doing their job.

“I will be honest, I’m disappointed to have to do this,” remarked Justice Minister David Lametti. “These are designed to protect our health care workers, doctors, nurses, and those who assist these health care professionals as well as those people who need access to healthcare.”

One doctor who lobbied the government to get tough with those who harass health care workers is Ottawa based Dr. Nili Kaplan-Myrth.

Speaking recently on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, Dr. Kaplan-Myrth shared her experience of receiving a death threat.

“We are seeing more and more nastiness, more violence, racist and threatening activity on social media as well as in our clinics and around hospitals and all of this is so not okay.”

There have been protests and online threats against doctors and other health care workers with many expressing fear for their safety and that of their patients.
