Musical theater’s most revered and influential composers has died.

Stephen Sondheim, the driving force behind some of Broadway’s most beloved and celebrated shows died suddenly at his home in Connecticut.

He was 91.

His first Broadway show was 1962’s Tony-winning  A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Sondheim wrote the words and the music making him one of the few major theater composers who handled words and music, including such legends as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter.

Sondheim dominated Broadway and was considered the greatest composer-lyricist of the last half of the 20th century by many.

His most productive period was in the ’70’s and ’80’s turning out hits like Follies, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park With George and more.

His close friend announced the death and said just the day before, Sondheim celebrated Thanksgiving dinner with friends in New York.
