The head of Canada’s largest private-sector union wants grocery stores to bring back hero pay.
Jerry Dias says front-line supermarket workers are facing the biggest risks when it comes to COVID-19 but the executives are the ones receiving multi-million-dollar bonuses.
“So they are sitting there, putting their employees at risk everyday, cause they’re on the front lines, and are being rewarded handsomely and there’s no recognition of who’s actually creating the wealth for them,” says Dias. “This is about greed period.”
Dias is calling on Canada’s big three grocery chains Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys to reinstate a two-dollar-an-hour pay bump that was introduced in the early days of the pandemic.
