Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer says PCR testing is still being limited to those at highest risk but now family members of health care workers will also be eligible.

“We are expanding eligibility to now include household members of patient facing healthcare workers in order to support timely identification of cases in healthcare workers in ongoing delivery of services,” said Dr. Kieran Moore.

As the province records another 74 COVID-19 deaths, Dr. Moore says ICU numbers are still high — currently 541 —  the number hospitalized with the virus at nearly 2,800 is starting to decline.

“Long term care outbreaks are also declining and we recently saw the first decline in the number of active residents cases in long term care since the OMICRON variant became the dominant strain.”

Will Ontario’s vaccine passports eventually be updated to include three doses instead of two?

“We’re waiting federal guidance on whether proof of vaccination for international travel will move to three vaccines, but in the interim, of all the measures the masking will be the last to go.” Dr. Moore adds that hand hygiene and distancing are just common sense.

The anti-viral Paxlovid will largely be given to unvaccinated Ontario residents.
