For the second time this month, a Toronto middle school is investigating an alleged antisemitic incident in which students reportedly performed the Nazi salute in front of classmates. It happened at Valley Park Middle School on February 17th.

A news release from the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre say based on conversations with a teacher who was present, who’s also Jewish, two students stood up on a filing cabinet and performed the Nazi salute in her classroom while a third shouted “Heil Hitler” from their desk.

“Whether the kids are getting it from social media, or protests their seeing or gaming, we in educational institutions need to continue what we’re doing because we’re doing the hard work,” said Shari Schwartz-Maltz, spokesperson with the Toronto District School Board.

The incident comes on the heels of a similar incident Charles H. Best Middle School earlier this month, in which students also allegedly performed the Nazi salute. And there have also been multiple incidents of swastikas being drawn TDSB schools in recent weeks.

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre are calling for an immediate investigation.

“It’s hard to fathom that in 2022, we’re dealing with repeated incidents of vandalism and swastikas at schools,” said Centre President Michael Levitt.

Both Toronto Mayor John Tory and Education Minister Stephen Lecce released statements condemning the actions.
