He co-wrote the song that went on to become the No. 1 song in the world during the summer of love in 1967, “A Whiter Shade of Pale.”

Procol Harum singer-keyboardist Gary Brooker has died at his home in England after a battle with cancer.

He told the Associated Press in 2017, playing “A Whiter Shade of Pale” in his honour would be flattering, but it’s not what he would have chosen adding he wouldn’t have it on his grave or even played at his funeral.  For that, he said, he’d write something much better.

Brooker was a constant member of Procol Harum throughout its entire existence.

Gary Brooker was 76.
