LONG TERM CARE VACCINATION POLICY UNDER REVIEW

The Ford government says it’s reviewing its policy that requires Ontario long term care workers to be vaccinated. Workers must have relieved two doses to stay on the job and have until March 14th to get their third shot. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore says he’ll work with Minister Paul Calandra to review the third dose.

“The workers have stepped up, they’ve gotten their first, second and a vast majority have gotten their third dose, so at this point I’m absolutely supportive of working with the Minister to reflect on their current rate of vaccination and the risk in the community and review whether that mandate of a third dose for workers should be maintained,” Dr. Moore told reporters.

The province made long term care the only sector where vaccination is a requirement for employment. There are currently 84 long-term care homes, or about 13 per cent of the province’s homes, with active COVID outbreaks.

When it comes to ending vaccination policies in hospitals and post secondary on March 1st, Dr. Moore had previously said he wanted to end workplace vaccination in sectors such as hospitals and post-secondary institutions on March 1, but now says removing these policies may take longer.

And for now, mask mandates are staying in place but when they are removed for public settings they will also be lifted in schools.
