Calling Russia’s attack on Ukraine ”a massive threat to security and peace around the world,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced more sanctions against Russia.
These will target 58 individuals and entities connected to Russia, including members of that country’s elite and their families, the paramilitary organization known as the Wagner Group and major Russian banks.
The sanctions, announced after G7 leaders had med virtually, will also affect members of the Russian Security Council, including key cabinet ministers.
Export permits worth more than $700-million are being cancelled and new ones will not be issued.
Ottawa is also prioritizing immigration applications for Ukrainians who want to come to this country, and is launching a dedicated phone line for anyone with urgent questions about immigrating from Ukraine.
The federal government is also arranging for the safe passage of Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families still in Ukraine through land borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
