The initial round of talks between Ukraine and Russia lasted nearly five hours but did not lead to an immediate end to the invasion.
An aide to Vladimir Putin says the two sides ”found certain points on which common positions could be foreseen.”
A top adviser to Ukraine’s president says the discussions focused on a possible ceasefire and that a second round could take place ”in the near future.”
Meanwhile President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed an application for Ukraine to join the European Union and has sent the documents off to Brussels.
The news came in a Facebook post of a picture of Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s prime minister and the speaker of its Parliament with the caption — “The history is being created now.”
