The Trudeau government is changing the rules to give those Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country a safe haven.
To begin, Ottawa has created a new visa category that will allow an ”unlimited number” to come here to live, work or study for up to two-years.
Those accepted under the Canada Ukraine Authorization For Emergency Travel program will have an open work or study permit and employers will be able to hire as many Ukrainians as they wish.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says the government is also waiving most of the typical visa requirements but that applicants will still need to supply biometrics and undergo a background screening process before leaving for Canada.
That process should open in about 14-days.
The government’s also introducing an ”expedited path” to permanent residency for Ukrainians with family in this country.
Fraser also says a ”wider circle of family members” will be able to sponsor Ukrainians who want to come to Canada on a more permanent basis.
The minister adds from conversations he’s had with the Ukrainian community, many will want to return home once the war ends.
