We’re learning more about an American journalist who was killed in Ukraine.

50 year old Brent Renaud was gathering material for a report about refugees in a suburb of the capital Kyiv that’s been the site of intense shelling by Russian forces in recent days.

Another journalist, Juan Arredondo, was with Renaud and was wounded.

“We crossed the first bridge in Irpin and going to film other refugees leaving and we got into a car, somebody offered to take us to the other bridge, and we crossed a checkpoint and they started shooting at us. So the driver turned around, but they kept shooting and hit my friend Renaud, and he’s been shot and left behind,” Arredondo explained to reporters while in hospital.

Kyiv Region police say Renaud died from his injuries and accuse Russian troops of opening fire on the car.

Brent Renaud had won many prestigious awards for documentary filmmaking including two duPont-Columbia journalism awards. With his brother Craig, Renaud produced programs for number of American news and media organizations, including HBO and The New York Times. They won a Peabody for Last Chance High, a series about at-risk youth in Chicago.
