Speaking after an emergency meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels, Joe Biden announced the U.S. is prepared to commit over $1-billion in humanitarian assistance to help millions of Ukrainians affected by Vladimir Putin’s war, while also announcing new sanctions on hundreds individual Russians and members of government.
Washington had previously committed to provide more than $2-billion in military equipment to Ukraine.
The American president says the U.S. is also ready to welcome 100,000 refugees.
”NATO has never, never been more united than it is today,” adds Biden.
”Putin is getting exactly the opposite of what he intended to have as a consequence of going into Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says the military alliance is stepping up its defences against possible chemical and nuclear weapons amid increasing concerns Moscow might use them.
