The federal government will spend billions to help provinces deal with the backlog of surgeries caused by the pandemic.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says the Liberals have tabled a bill that would see an additional 2 billion dollars in health care transfers to the provinces and territories on a per capita basis.

“In many cases the pandemic has brought to light problems that already existed for many years and made things even more difficult and this is particularly true in the case of delays surgeries, diagnostics and treatments of all kinds,” said Duclos.

A recent report from the Ontario Medical Association estimates there were one million surgeries on backlog at the end of last year with millions more waiting for diagnostic services.

On Friday, Ontario is reporting 22 additional COVID-19 deaths.

The number of people in hospital has risen to 667 and the number in ICU has dropped to 161.
