She was the first woman to serve as leader of the government in Canada’s Senate.
Former Liberal senator and journalist Joyce Fairbairn has died.
The cause was not immediately known although she resigned her seat in 2013 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
The Lethbridge, Alberta native was appointed to the Senate in 1984.
Fairbairn broke ground as one of the first women journalists in the Parliamentary Press Gallery and later became a senior adviser to then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau
She was also a major supporter of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and was was inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame in 2011.
Joyce Fairbairn was 82.
