Doug Ford says the province is in the midst of “a little spike of COVID-19” but that it’s manageable.

“We’re going to continue to be cautious, I follow the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, but our hospitals are in good shape right now, we expected a little spike and we have said that over the last month but again, that little spike we can manage,” said Ford.

Meantime, Toronto’s top doctor is urging people to continue wearing masks in public indoor settings. Dr. Eileen De Villa says mandates are only a temporary tool and we need to adjust our behaviour.

“Knowing that we have knowledge and tools available to us, it’s actually on all of us to collectively and at an individual level to use those tools to great effect, we’ve done it before, and I don’t see any reason why we can’t do it again.”

Toronto public health is launching a third dose drive to encourage residents to get a booster shot. The city will also run mobile vaccine clinics where third dose uptake is lower or where cases are higher.

The province is reporting 857 people in hospital with the virus today, up over 200 from last Monday or 30%. There’s also a small bump in the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care, up 10 to 168.
