Former Conservative defence minister Peter MacKay says the former leaders of France and Germany mounted a spirited opposition to Ukraine joining NATO at a historic 2008 summit.

MacKay recalls the fateful NATO meeting in Romania that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy referred to recently when he called out the former leaders of Germany and France — Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy — for blocking his country’s entry into the NATO alliance in 2008 following the recent atrocities in the town of Bucha.

In a video now seen around the world, along with images of dead Ukrainian civilians, Zelenskyy invited the former German chancellor and French president to visit Bucha and see what he called Russia’s policy of concessions has led to over the past 14 years.

The Conservative government of Stephen Harper had wholeheartedly supported the expansion of NATO to include Ukraine.

Ukraine dropped its plans to join NATO two years later under former president Viktor Yanukovych, but it became a foreign policy priority again in 2017 under then-president Petro Poroshenko.
