If the Liberals should win the June 2 election, they promise to increase the amount low-income seniors get from the province as a top-up to the Old Age Security payments.

Ontario’s Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) program currently gives up to $83-monthly or $996-annually, to seniors with an annual income of up to $23,904 for single people and up to $47,808 for couples.

Leader Steven Del Duca says his party would raise the threshold to an even $25,000 for single seniors and $50,000 for couples, as well as add up to $1,000 to the annual total they receive through the program.

He adds this is expected to cost the province around $250-million-a-year, with more details to come when the Liberals release their fully costed election campaign platform.

The party also pledges to increase the number of seniors who qualify for GAINS, which Del Duca says would help more seniors stay at home.
