Vladimir Putin’s Russian military offensive in eastern Ukraine is gathering momentum as the United Nations Secretary-General surveys the destruction in towns outside Kyiv that experienced some of the worst horrors of the first onslaught of the war which began February 24th.

Antonio Guterres on Thursday condemned the atrocities visited on towns like Bucha.

Evidence of mass killings of civilians was found there after Russian forces retreated from the area in the face of stiffer than expected Ukrainian resistance.

Forced to regroup after failing to take the capital, Putin’s military switched its focus to the vital eastern industrial heartland.

There is word from Ukraine’s military that several areas in the Donbas have come under intense fire in the past day.

Guterres said he could imagine his own family and relatives as victims of war.

Guterres also told reporters on the tour with him, “When we talk about war crimes, we cannot forget the worst of crimes is war itself.”

He said the highest price in war is paid by civilians.

Guterres meets today with Ukraine’s President Volodomyr Zelenskyy after he says he was told in Moscow Tuesday by Vladimir Putin that trapped civilians in the southern port city of Mariupol would be allowed to leave safely.
