More civilians are being allowed to safely leave the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.
A first group of 100 civilians trapped for weeks inside the Mariupol steel plant was able to leave Sunday en route to a Ukrainian controlled city.
Video posted online by Ukrainian forces yesterday shows elderly women and mothers with small children climbing over a steep pile of rubble from the sprawling Azovstal steel plant, eventually boarding a bus.
If successful, these evacuations would represent rare progress in easing the human cost of Vladimir Putin’s almost 10-week war.
Previous attempts to open safe corridors out of Mariupol and other cities have broken down.
After yesterday’s evacuation efforts, Russian forces began firing missiles at the steel plant once again.
Meantime, U.S. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and other American lawmakers are continuing their overseas trip.
After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on the weekend, they met Monday in Warsaw with the Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and other Polish lawmakers.
The trip came two days after U-S President Joe Biden asked Congress for $33-billion to bolster Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
