She was a singer and actress who taught Britain’s King Edward the VII to dance and danced with with Prince Charles at an embassy ball, but her main claim to fame was as the inventor of discotheque.

Regine Zylberberg claimed to have invented the disco when she opened her first nightclub in Paris in the 1950s.  The venue in the city’s Latin Quarter, featured turntables and DJs at a time when most dance venues had a jukebox.

The style caught on and later became a multi-million dollar empire comprised of 22 clubs in New York, Rio de Janeiro and Asia.

A family friend confirmed Regine died yesterday in Paris.

She was 92.
