A Maud Lewis painting, once used to buy a grilled cheese sandwich, is going to auction May 14th.
The painting was acquired by a couple in London, Ontario, 50-years ago from one of their regular customers in exchange for lunch at their cafe.
The painting of a black truck is being sold by Miller & Miller Auctions in New Hamburg, Ontario.
A spokesperson says the painting is a rare and a striking example of Lewis’s work and is expected to fetch upward of $35,000. Previously, her works have sold at auction for as much as $65,000.
Maud Lewis is recognized as one of Canada’s premier folk artists.
She died in Digby, Nova Scotia in 1970 at the age of 69.
