The Queen will not attend Tuesday’s official Opening of Parliament for the first time in 59 years.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth continues to experience mobility problems, and after consulting with her doctors, has reluctantly decided that she will not attend. Before now, the 96-year-old Queen has only missed the opening of Parliament twice during her time on the throne – in 1959 and 1963 when she was pregnant.

As with custom, the monarch reads out the government’s plans for upcoming legislation.

Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales will read the Queen’s Speech on her behalf.

The British monarch has been forced to cancel a number of public engagements since being hospitalised last October for an unspecified illness, although she has continued to carry out many of her duties virtually.
