Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says his country will soon have another Victory Day to celebrate, like the May 9th observance over the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

In a televised message in Ukrainian, Zelenskyy said, “We always fight for ourselves. For our freedom. For our independence. So that the victory of our ancestors was not in vain. They fought for freedom for us and won. We are fighting for freedom for our children, and therefore we will win.”

“We will never forget what our ancestors did in World War II, which killed more than eight million Ukrainians,” said President Zelensky.

Also on May 9th, Russia’s Leader Vladimir Putin told supporters in Red Square, Moscow’s military action in Ukraine is a forced response to western policies.

Speaking at a military parade marking the World War II victory over the Nazis, Putin drew parallels between the Red Army’s fighting against the Nazi troop and the Russian forces’ action in Ukraine.
