The US Senate has failed to pass an abortion rights bill to enshrine Roe v. Wade into federal law.

The vote — almost along party lines — provided a stark display of the nation’s partisan divide over the landmark court decision and the limits of legislative action. The bill needed 60 votes to pass an automatic filibuster, but the final tally came to 49 in favour and 51 against in the closely divided Senate.

The vote promises to be the first of several efforts in Congress to preserve the nearly 50-year-old court ruling.

President Joe Biden called on Congress to pass legislation that would guarantee the right to abortion after it was revealed that the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade.

The outcome of the court’s actual ruling, expected this summer, will likely surface on the campaign trail ahead of the fall midterm elections.
