Not wishing to remain neutral any longer, the two largest European Union countries yet to join NATO, now want to be part of the alliance.
Finland says it would apply to join and Sweden could do the same shortly – moves that would bring about the expansion that Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed to prevent.
Finland’s 1,300-kilometre border will more than double the length of the frontier between NATO and Russia.
”As a member of NATO, Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance,” President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in a joint statement.
”Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay.  We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days.”
The Kremlin reacted with a warning.
”This cannot fail to arouse our regret, and is a reason for corresponding symmetrical responses,” said spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who did not elaborate.
Asked if the desire by the two Nordic countries posed a direct threat to Russia, Peskov replied definitely.
”NATO expansion does not make our continent more stable and secure.”
