A couple of scandals have rocked the Ontario election campaign leading up to the June 2nd vote.

Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca confirms his party has dropped a candidate who published a book detailing scientifically baseless views on homosexuality.

Barry Stanley, now the former Liberal candidate for Parry Sound-Muskoka apparently did not disclose the existence of his book to members of the party’s vetting team.

Del Duca says the party condemns Stanley’s views and says they won’t accept candidates with a history of homophobia or bigotry.

Meantime, there are more calls for the Progressive Conservatives Stephen Lecce to withdraw his candidacy for re-election in the GTA riding of King-Vaughan, after it came to light the Education Minister was involved in a “slave auction” fundraiser when he was a student at Western University in 2006.

Karen Brown is the president of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario and is asking what sort of commitment Lecce going to make to grow and develop.

“We hear the normal apology and that’s it. What has in done in regard to reflection and really understanding systemic racism. What took place there was systemic. It’s a fraternity. These things are embedded and continue from generation to generation. So an apology doesn’t take away the mindset for his engagement and participation in that activity,” Brown explained.

Similar sentiments have been echoed by leaders of other Ontario teacher federations.
