A 16-year-old male is facing charges after an attempted carjacking in Etobicoke in a Walmart parking lot Tuesday night. Police say three suspects approached a woman, grabbed her purse and keys but were unable to get into her car. The suspects fled the scene but a witness stopped one and held him until police arrived.

“I think if people hadn’t been stopping, one gentleman actually got out of his car, I think if people hadn’t started slowing down their cars, it would have turned out differently,” the unidentified victim told CP24.

There have been 60 armed carjackings so far this year, up slightly from last year and Mayor John Tory says police have made a number of arrests.

“The chief and his people are on this, they are applying resources to it, to focus on it to try and stop this activity and they’ve been successful at having quite a few arrests in the last number of weeks to send the signal you will be brought to justice,” said Tory.

The most high profile carjacking happened Monday night when Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner’s vehicle was stolen by armed suspects also in Etobicoke at a movie theatre the Queensway and Islington.

No arrests have been made in this case.
