Canada is banning China’s Huawei Technologies and ZTE from its 5G wireless networks joining this country’s intelligence allies. Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says this will safeguard Canada’s telecommunications system.
“There are many hostile actors, ready to exploit vulnerabilities in our defenses, we must redouble or efforts, that’s why our government conducted an extensive and thorough security examination of 5G wireless telecommunications technologies, including those service providers who represent a high risk to the integrity of the sector,” said Minister Mendicino.
He says the government is also tabling legislation soon to further strengthen telecommunications and protect national security.
Washington has alleged Huawei’s fifth-generation wireless networks could allow the Chinese government to interfere. The move by the Trudeau government — delayed more than three years — could ratchet up tensions with China.
Relations between the countries deteriorated after Canada’s arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at the request of the U.S. in 2018.
Two Canadians were jailed by China soon after and released only last September after Washington struck a deal with Mung allowing her to return to China.
